Default 02 "2.5L" engine removal

Hello All, My daughters 02 Altima died at 129K, I've experienced the horrors since 90Kmiles (oil consumption, Noises and then finally bam!) Too many visits to our local Nissan dealer yielded no help. Sure they changed the sensors and the CA, but said from the start it would be an engine change at $6K. Being a handy ole fart and a cheap *%#* I have decided to rebuild the puppy. My Haynes manual tells me the engine and transaxle must come out as a unit....and from the bottom of the car no less! Again this is the 4 cylinder 2.5, I'm thinking I should be able to split it and lift the motor out the top....any advice would be greatly appreciated.,
To avoid the same fiasco from starting all over again my plans are for adding headers and custom CATless exhaust, and some Loctite on the screws in the intake just from what I've read here...anything else I should be thinking of?,
The Lil witch wants it lowered and 18's in order to continue to drive it...she too damn cute not to oblige...so again any tips would be nice!
Thanks!!!s

Well, I can't help you with the rebuild, but welcome to the forums!

You're going to have to take it out the bottom. Even if you split the trans from the engine you'll have to move the trans back far enough to get by the input shaft which you can't because there is no room between the body and the trans.

Well the stubborn ole fart that I am will attempt to get that thing out tomorrow. I got the Intake, head and all the accessories off today, everything tagged and marked "not" to ease in re-assembly. Nice how everything is "layered on" and squeezed in. If only I had a magic wand!
I appreciate the response and I will let you know if I was able to figure something out...Thanks!

I hope everything goes well. Hey take pics and do a write-up on the rebuild if you have time. I am sure it would come in handy for other members.

20 May,
Well I got her out, from the bottom, Initially I didn't realize that the forward front subframe support dropped out as well. I left the engine and tranny on the subframe and basically just disconnected any wire, hose and of course the L/R mounts connected to the body then dropped it. Nearly the whole front end of the car is apart and I'm guessing now is the time to consider upgrades???

Now would be the time to do the upgrades imo. Are you rebuilding with new parts? Or just taking it apart to see all the problems and replacing those parts? Pictures would be nice but if you don't have time, i understand.

The plan right now is to assess what there is then decide if it's rebuild "cheap" or buy a long block. I was in hopes it was just a head and although it did eat a head gasket and there may be warpage the real problem is on the lower end. Compression checks accomplished "cold" (Engine dead) prior to head removal #1 20psi,#2 5psi,#3 0 to less than 5psi &#4 15psi. The No.1 & 4 cylinders appear to be glazed overly pretty good with 2&3 walls even worse. I'll tear her down and spec it out and go from there. I should have been paying better attention to what she was telling me 40K miles ago I may have gotten off cheaper!
