Default 1993 Altima cutsoff at times

Hello All,

I have a 1993 Altima . I have a put in a new distributor , wires cap and plugs. 80 % of the time it runs great . Now the problem. Sometimes when you are sitting at idle the motor will (spike) the tac will jump to from 700 idle to 1200 or so for a second then go back to nomal idle. Also when driving and you come to a stop, sometime it will cutoff but will crank back up like a champ.Someone told me it maybe my oqygen sensor . What do you all think?

Tony

it is definately not the o2 sensor. it sounds like either an air flow meter prob or idle air control valve. there are methods to cleaning these items. post back if you are wondering i will try to explain

Default Same Problem

My wife's "93 Altima is doing the same thing. Are their codes I can check myself? I stopped in at a couple of parts stores but they don't have a code reader for anything over 10 yrs old.
It runs fine but stalls out when coming to a stop. I am going to take the air intake off and spray carb cleaner into the throttle body and see if that works.

to clean the iac valve, have someone keep the engine running at around 2,000 rpm and pull the hose (i think it about 3/4 big) off the intake tube. the hose runs down around the firewall and you cant really see where it goes. it goes to the iac valve. spray carb cleaner into this hose while keeping the engine running. it will try to die on you. to clean the air flow meter just pull the air box up and spray carb cleaner into the screen leading into the intake tube.

i also have a 93 and mine accelerates great, but sputters at idle speed sometimes and dies sometimes when i stop. i replaced the o2 sensor and the idle air control valve and neither fixed it. im going to check the egr valve next. i will let you know what i get.

I am seeing the air flow meter's internal solder joints going bad on the 93 through 97 altima lately. If you feel confident in your electrical work, try checking the solder joints in the AFM. If not, try a used on from a junkyard, or pull a part.

Just a few hints if you decide to re-solder the joints: The plug to the air flow meter is attached with two screws. If you take the screws out the plug will still be attached by three solder joints. These are the joints I am seeing go bad. If you use a razor and cut the seal off around the square cap you will be able to see the joints. Even if the joints don't appear to be broken at the solder. Heat them up and add more solder. Sometimes the break is too small to see.

when you say air flow meter, are you reffering to the mass airflow sensor? i just want to make sure i dissect the right part and cant find air flow meter in my manual anywhere. thanks for all the help. i cant tell you how much i appreciate it.

Hahaha, I have the same problem.... The idle will shift from 700 to 1200 and back down.... RANDOMLY. But I have gotten accustomed to its "RAG MOMENTS".

Either way, it is only like that during idle........but NO PROBLEM ACCELERATING.

My Altima just hates traffic.... But on the HIGHWAY........Just get out of my way.
