Note i've never installed or has subs before, so don't really know much.

you might want to look into powered/amplified subs like these:

The infinity bass link comes to mind. I would only consider the bazooka tubes if you didn't have a lot of trunk space like in a truck with an extended cab or subcompact hatchback like a yaris. The powered subs are great for lease vehicles because there's not much involved as far as the power wiring goes. With a regular mono amp and sub, you have to invest more in the power/ground wiring.
Your friend is right about leaving the speakers as they are since it's leased. You CAN technically change out the speakers though, it won't void the warranty, but you lose in the end if you don't put back the oem speakers when the lease runs out. You just lose out financially. I've seen other people add tint or put in an aftermarket head unit, then just take the loss when their lease ends.
Also, I wouldn't get the amplified subs from crutchfield. They're not the cheapest in that department. I would go with crutchfield if you're going to be doing the head unit install yourself because they include for free the exact wiring harness and faceplate installation kit for free when you buy head units from them and also provide 24/7 tech/customer support
