Default AC clutch problem...

Ok I just bought a 97 Altima 213k miles runs and drives perfect just needed a valve cover gasket! Very clean inside and out Limited Edition. Only problem is that inorder to get the clutch to engage I have to turn on the AC and push the cluthc in... It wont go in on its own and when it cycles off while driving it wont turn back on till I go under the car and push the cluch back in... What would cause this the AC blow ICE cold IF I push in the clutch manually...
