I have a 2003 Altima with the 4cyl. It has just started using oil and the check engine light is on throwing a P0420 code. Does this mean my Cat. converter is bad and will this cause oil consumpsion ?
I keep hearing of pre-cats...What are these and what should I replace first ?
Yea I got a Check engine light too, I got a bad kitty. Not happy about it I have a fewe mechanic friends that have shops all tell me not to fix it. It's not hurting anything. I want the light off though! They can reset it but it will come back on.

these engines are prone to oil consumption after the cat goes bad. they will suck the cat material into the cylinders and score them. you should get some spark plug anti foulers and put them between the second 02 sensor and the manifold this will stop the ses from coming on. but you will need to prolly remove the manifold and make sure you get the rest of the cat material out of it so it doesnt damage the engine more.
