did it require much sanding off the grime on the headlights?? When I used the Rain-x restoration kit on my totaled 96 corolla, it didn't require any sanding, just lots of polishing.

I've used that kit. It comes with an attachment for your drill, right? The hazing will come back, but with regular polishing you can keep them looking good.

The kit comes with a Meguiars foam sanding pad with finishing discs (1000 and 3000 grit), Meguiars Easy Buff polishing pad that attaches to your drill, a 6oz bottle of Meguiars PlastX, a 6oz bottle of Meguiars Headlight Protectant and a microfiber towel.

It does not take a lot of sanding. I did about 40 - 50 stroke with the 1000 followed by the same amount with the 3000 and then did 2 applications of the PlastX followed by the Protectant. The whole thing took me less than an hour for both lights.

I did the same thing on my sister-in-law's car which had heavily faded headlights. You could not even see the bulbs. It worked beautifully and again less than an hour for both lights.
