Default Blower Motor Diagnostics

I have a 2007 Altima (base). The blower motor stopped working last week. I started diagnostics with checking fuses and voltage at the motor. The fuses were fine however I got some strange results on voltage. Even with the fan speed control "off" I read a consistent 8 volts. As I turn the fan speed control up the voltage goes up from 8 volts to 9 volts at the highest speed. I would have expected no current with the fan control off, and 12 volts with the fan control at it's highest speed.
Regardless, the blower isn't working at any speed setting. I've order another blower but I'm concerned that the strange voltage readings may indicate another issue. This model does not have a blower motor resistor at the blower like previous models.
Any ideas on the voltage readings or other possible issues would be appreciated. It's getting cold out.

Backprobe the blower motor Blue/Yellow circuit and tap it to ground, if that doesn't make the blower operate, the blower motor/power transistor assembly is bad. When the blower motor does operate while grounding that circuit, the climate control panel may be faulty, repeat the test from the connector at the control panel to verify the wiring is not damaged. Also, When verifying voltage, Use the power and ground wires to the blower motor. Other grounds may give you faulty readings.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the reply. Can you explain "Backprobe the blower motor Blue/Yellow circuit and tap it to ground". I don't exactly understand what that means.

I grounded the blue/yellow circuit and the motor did nothing. After checking voltage with a better multimeter, it does push 12 volts on high, but is still showing 8 volts when the switch is off. The new blower should be here in a couple days. Hopefully I will plug it in and all will be well. I'll post the results.

Sorry it took me a while to reply. You did the test correctly, sounds like a blower motor assembly. For the sake of the forum and other people that might have this problem in the future. When you fix the problem, post your steps for diagnosis and repair that fixed the problem. I hate to see people blow huge money at dealers for fixes like this.

Hmm.

Check the blower motor relay. It is located behind the hood pull. It is one of the middle blue relays. U might be able to swap it with another one next to it to test it. And I believe there are two fuses for the blower motor in that knee panel.. Double check them too.

Hi, I've tested one of the four blue relays, and i'm afraid, since they all look the same, i misplaced them. What are the other 3 relays for ?
Thanks

OK - switched the blower motor and that was great - for one day. It stopped working again. I came back here and saw the relay post. Just switched the relays to test and that is definitely the problem. Now - where do I get one of these little blue gems? Anyone have a part # or good supplier?

P.S. please don't point out that I bought a blower motor for nothing....it stings.

I would go to napa or straight to Nissan with that one. Sorry it took me a while to respond. The relay should have a small number on it that you might be able to have a parts store cross-reference.

Whats the return policy on the blower???

Can you post any of the numbers that are on the relay? I can try and cross reference them and give some part numbers to you.

Hi, I was able to fix the problem, the blower motor works great now. Here's what I did. That relay is located in the instrumental panel fuse box ( behind the fuse box). Remove the cover for the fuse box, you'll see the fuses, unscrew one screw next to it, and there's one more screw to be removed, remove the panel below the steering wheel, it's very easy - just pull it down. Now you have easy access to fuse box, on the other side of the box there are 4 blue identical relays ( part number ends on 42 . there's about 10 digits number),. Relays are located like this... *__**__* ( relay1, space, relay 2 relay3, space, relay 4). blower motor relay is relay 1. Ideally would be to replace it ( you can buy it at the dealership or online). What I did, i replaced relay 1 and relay 2 ( relay 2 is for radio),,,everything is working great both blower motor and radio, if one day radio stops working i know what to fix. But I need heater more than radio, specially living in Minnesota.
Let me know if you have questions.

looks like this will be a common problem with these cars. I better note the relay number if I ever run into this in the future.
