Anybody gotten pulled over for having illegal tint? If so, how dark was it and did you get a ticket, warning etc...?

Ive known people who got pulled over. I think they had to be between20-30%. Some got warnings and some got tickets. In PA most aftermarket tint is illegal, but it mainly depends on how much of a d!ck the cop wants to be.

I got a ticket for illegal tint (VA) 10 days after buying my '07, which was just about a month ago. Actually, I got pulled over for speeding, but the trooper saw the tint (both front and rear were tinted when I bought the car) and checked, and wrote me for illegal front tint. When he was doing the check he was saying 18%-19% for the front, but then on the ticket he wrote 43 front & 27 back. He did write that after I asked about the limits though, so I'm not sure if that's what he got for readings or if he was explaining what the minimum was that would pass. He did explain that by law in VA the limit is 50% front and 35% rear.

I took the car back to the dealer - actually had to take it back for a bad battery anyway - and they removed the tint. I'm guessing the judge will drop the charge, but we'll see.

I agree with Superbad as far as how much of a ---- the cop wants to be. I live in Ohio where the law states 50% on the front sides and no restrictions on the rear. I have mine tinted at 20%. I checked with the local law and he stated that I probably would not have a problem. They can not pull you over for tint only. His advise was if I was pulled over for say speeding to roll the window down before the officer walks up to your car. They just want to be able to see inside clearly. But you always run the chance that you catch a ---- or one having a bad day. My understanding is that the fine is $100.00 and removal of the offending tint. I have had mine tinted for 3 months and have had no problems. Numerous times I have had state patrol or sheriff's next to me and no problems.

in southern california, it's light tint for the driver/passenger and any darkness in the rear sides and rear window. For no hassle purposes, I only had the rear sides and rear done...that way I don't have to explain and show a cop that I had light tint done in the front.

I actually went dark tint with this altima. I had limousine tint, I think like 5% with an old 96 corolla, but it sucked when it was night time and I needed to see!! i had to roll down windows just to see around me, so dark with this altima is fine for me!!

Just a follow up; I went to court today for the tint (and the speeding) and Commonwealth's Attorney dropped the charges for the tint after I told him I had it removed. No biggie since I was there for the other ticket anyway - but I would have been slightly peeved if that had been the only reason I had to go.

I assume the car had darker than 50 35 35 on it?

I live in MD. Anything under 35% is illegal. I have 30% which is just a little darker than the legal percent. The installer told me a trick. If and when I'm driving and see a police car in front, back or side of me, just open the sun roof and let some light shine in. This way, they can't really tell by the naked eye. It works for me.
