Default DIY: Front Bumper Removal/Headlight Removal/DDM Tuning HID Install

Last night I received my DDM Tuning Raptor HID Kit. Just finished putting it in. These are the steps that I used to complete the process.

Covered in this DIY are the following:

-02-06 Altima Front Bumper removal
-02-06 Altima Headlight Removal
-DDM Tuning HID Install Step-by-Step

Tools Needed

-Flathead Screwdriver
-Phillips head Screwdriver
-Ratchet Screwdriver (optional)
-10mm Socket
-Ratchet + 3 or 6" Extension
-Dremel or other rotary cutting tool
-7/16" or 1/2" Drill bit and drill
-Electrical Tape (optional)
-Extra set of hands (not necessary, but could help)
-OEM HID Dustcaps (optional, or non-HID also optional)

Front Bumper Removal

Go ahead and grab your Phillips head and ratchet with 10mm socket. On the underside of the bumper you will see 4 black Phillips head screws like below (1st picture) and 5 10mm bolts securing the bumper (2nd picture). Remove all 9 and put them somewhere safe. You'll need them in just a little while.

Next, grab your Ratchet Screwdriver with a Phillips head bit. If you do not have one you must find a Phillips head screwdriver that is not more that ~4" long. Otherwise you will need to remove your tire for this step. You'll need to turn your wheels all the way in the opposite direction of the side you're on (ex. passenger side screw turn wheels to left). This allows enough room for your screwdriver to get in there. Remove the 1 screw that's where I'm pointing in this picture.

Removing this will enable you to peel back the wheel well enough so that you may remove the next 2 bolts.

You'll need the ratchet for this. The first bolt is just behind the wheel well liner and isn't hard to get to (shown).

The 2nd one, however, isn't that easy. You must pull back the liner a little farther and the bolt is located about 3/4 the way to the headlight. Follow the body gap between the top of the bumper and the fender. It's silver in color.

Repeat for opposite side.

Next pop your hood and remove the plastic tabs on the top of the bumper and the top of the grille. The tabs on the grille are not pictured but are easily seen.

After removing all the tabs (6 total) the bumper is ready to come off. The only thing holding it in now is 1 spot under each headlight. I stood in front of the car with 1 hand reaching to the wheel well and the other hand just below the license plate and pulled straight out. It might take some force but you should not break it.

This is where having an extra set of hands helps because the bumper isn't exactly tiny. Place the bumper somewhere as to not get scratched up.

End of Front Bumper Removal DIY

Headlight Removal

All you'll need for this is your 10mm socket. There are 4 bolts securing the headlights. 2 on top, 1 on the side, and 1 in front.

After taking all 4 out pull straight out with the light. There will be a little resistance because of a clip. The light will only go so far before you need to take out the bulbs or remove the plugs. I found it easier to remove the plugs to the bulbs therefore I didn't need to worry about my fingers touching the bulbs.

End Headlight Removal

DDM HID Install

Look at the back of the healight. Take the dust cap (big gray circle) and turn it counter-clockwise to remove it. Here you will see a power and a ground wire coming through the dust cap connecting to the back of the light bulb. Disconnect these wires. Mine were a bit stubborn but some needle nose pliers helped.

Click the image to open in full size.

Take your flat head and persuade the rubber grommet covering the wires through the dust cap.

Click the image to open in full size.

Now you have this.

Click the image to open in full size.

Now since the HID wires are a little bigger than these stock wires we just removed we need to enlarge the hole in the dust cap. This is where if you have OEM HID dust caps you swap them. I'm pointing at a circle (raised edge) that's on the back of the cap. This is the guideline I used to make my hole. Using a Dremel cutting wheel enlarge this hole so that the new bigger grommet will fit it.

Fish new wiring harness through the hole and secure grommet into place.

Now you want to get your 1/2" or 7/16" bit and drill. Drill a hole near the one you just enlarged. This is for the wires that we just removed from the dust cap. They're needed to connect to the aftermarket wiring harness.

Click the image to open in full size.

Run the wires (red and black) through the new hole and secure existing grommet into the hole.

To install the HID bulb you must first remove the stock H1 bulb. Lift up on the wire holder to allow the bulb to come out. Insert HID bulb while lining up the bumps at the base of the bulb. It WILL NOT go all the way in unless this is correct. Pretty much, the white thing on the outside of the bulb must be down. Put wire holder back into place to secure bulb.

Connect the corresponding wires to the stock plugs shown in the picture above.

Reinstall dust cap.

Before you put your headlight back in you must find a place to mount your ballast. On the passengerside I mounted it on the side of the washer fluid resovoir. The driverside I cannot describe where it was placed. Find a good flat surface and secure it.

Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.

After mounting the ballast connect the corresponding plugs to it and to the HID wiring assembly from the ballast. Connect all the plugs back to their bulbs on the headlight.

Now all you have to do is the other side and put your car back together. DONE!

For reference this is the DDM Tuning Raptor HID kit. I bought it on sale from www.ddmtuning.com for $29.99 + shipping. If they still have them on sale I would HIGHLY recommend, them especially for that price.

I only removed the bumper because you can't get to the two lower bolts on the headlights without taking it off. Had to do it again today because one of my grommets slipped out and caused an ocean in one headlight. Actually swapped out to some other headlights.

wish they would make it easier for you to remove the headlight assemblies without removing the bumper.

In the photo where you are holding the hid bulb in your hand, I have the same bulbs but it does not fit in all the way into the headlight. Im confused.

I have a 2003 altima. I purchased h1 hid set for the low beams and originally thought they must have given me the wrong bulb because no matter what i tried, it wasn't able to fit all the way into the headlight. I took out the stock bulbs, and you can see that they are even shaped differently. But I can tel from the photo's that you have the same hid bulbs as I do. Is it suppossed to fit snug in the headlamp?

I'm on my lunch break at work right now, I have my headlights with the HID's in them off the car in the garage at the moment, I'll take a pic of the backside for you when I get home later tonight. But to try to answer your question, the bulb will only go in 1 way, if you're trying to put it in and it's not going, try flipping it over, the 2 little nipples on at the base of the bulb will line up with the dimples on the headlight.

great write up... but i didnt remove the front bumper to install the HID KIT. the only thing i really had to do was twist off the windsheild washer fluid spout which was pretty easy and if you have an intake then the driver side is good to go otherwise you'll have to remove the stock intake box

The HID kit plugs into the stock wires. No splicing involved.
