Default DSL Modem

We just signed up for CenturyLink's $20/month dsl. I didn't want to lease a modem or buy one from them, so I'm going to find an ADSL2+ modem at Best Buy, MicroCenter or Amazon or some place. What can you guys tell me about them?

I signed up for the 12mpbs, if that helps. Looking for cost effectiveness, good up/down speeds and reliability. Suggestions?

Is that the one you use?

I do have a small d-link modem...a DSL-520B, but I'm not sure if it's a good fit. Couldn't get it to connect last night. CL said they showed my line as active, but couldn't see the modem connected. Then I was thinking that maybe I need a better modem.

I have used it in a small startup business that has two joining warehouse's and it worked great. Not only could it be your modem but could be the line coming in to your house.

Well now I'm having issues with my wireless...I have a Netgear modem and Tenda wireless router. I can see my network, but gots no internets. Am I supposed to connect the 2 devices together with a crossover or straight cable? I'm using a straight now, so I wonder if that's my issue.

And what about the WAN? What's the deal with that?

I'm glad there are you network guys out there!

Straight cables are correct, no crossover. Try to power cycle the modem by disconnecting the power supply for 2 minutes and reconnect.

Did that...Probably 5 or 6 times. One of the nerds here told me to change the router gateway to the modem's address because that's where it stops...So the "gateway" needs to open up.

From your ISP, do you have a Static IP or Dynamic IP?

If dynamic, make sure you are "automatically" obtaining an address from your modem within your router settings. Setting would probably be called "Get Dynamically From ISP".

If static, you need to call your ISP and obtain:

IP Address, Subnet, DNS Server 1, and DNS Server 2 information

With DSL, you will need your login credentials to proceed connection.

If your ISP is using PPPOE DSL, then make sure you enable the "PPPOE" setting in your router configuration.

Let me know how it goes.

I couldn't stand dsl. Too slow and I never qualified for faster speeds, so I switched to cable internet. For the same price it was so much faster...about 26mbps as opposed to 3mbps!! And I also get 3mb upload speeds!!
