Improving Performance on 2.5
Hello all, I am extremely new and have been eagerly searching for quite some time now to find good suggestions on gaining a little more hp for my 2.5L... I read the thread that Poochmastaflex created, but I'm not too sure if that will work for me...
I was looking at the Stillen Magnaflow Stainless Steel Cat-Back Exhaust System, but besides that, that's all I know for sure... Are there any products/ways I can get a little more from my ride, or if it's even worth the money and time for a 2.5L? All serious suggestions are encouraged please!

It's ALWAYS worth it...even if it only puts a smile on your face, or makes you feel warm inside when you goose the throttle.
No chance you're gonna win any 1/4 mile challenges with a few bolt-ons, but you should have some fun with the result, regardless of how much horsepower you end up gaining.
Usually the basic 'bolt-on' upgrade path starts with Intake, Headers, Exhaust. If you manage to do all 3, you will be pretty happy I think. Even if you only can afford to do one at a time, that should be able to help you feel the difference.
Auto or manual tranny?

Stillen light-weight underdrive crankshaft pully (CHEAP - Really helps the torque, car revs up much faster)
Stillen Grounding Kit (CHEAP and easy - ensures that sensors and computers are not affected by power surges that can drain performance)
Stillen QR Pro Fuel/Air Management System (Obviously the biggest increase in all around torque and horsepower. Have to use premium gas but also daily driving helps gas milage. Literally feels like a 4-5psi boost at 4.5-6.5 RPMs)
InJen CAI (Not that expensive for the results - GREAT SOUND! Gives power around rpms)
OBX Header (Not that expensive for the results - Definitely louder from the front of the car, gives car a cool "blow-off-valve type sound" when sucking in air)
OBX Throttle Body Spacer (CHEAP and easy - In theory increases airflow greatly but installed at the same time as the header so not really sure how much but I'm sure it helped)
Overall review, the car makes a truly badass growl from under the hood when throttle pressed decently. My first gear has crazy torque and can just tear up the road on clutch release, major tire squeel in 2nd and chirp into 3rd.
My problem is that I have a HUGE bottleneck after my header. I NEED to get an highflow cat and exhaust system. I know the magnaflow sounds decent and I know it is probably impossible to find a high-flow exhaust that isn't that much louder than stock.
Still wishing someone had insight on a system that allows all of that massive airflow coming in to flow faster all the way out without a nasty noise.
So, to sum it all up, I would definitely invest in the items above marked cheap since they will be budget but still effective and give you more torque and performance and also as noted by unclear_motives and Altima4me said airflow will definitely give you satisfying results so do it in pieces or save on labor and all in one but CAI in my experience is awesome. If you get a CAI get a throttle body spacer while you are at it since it sits in between the intake and throttle body.
Please let me know if you have any questions about any of the products that I have purchased and I'll gladly discuss.

Conserning the Stillen QR Pro Fuel/Air Management System, how much of a hp gain are we talking? 10-15hp? Have you installed this yourself?

I am starting to think that performance for the 2.5 is a four letter word to the aftermarket. Honestly, 3 out of every 5 Altimas I see on the road are a 2.5, so why does it seem like all the performance parts out there are for the 3.5? That, and everything I see for the 2.5 seems to be for 2006 and older! We got exhaust, intake, maybe headers (not CARB approved) and from only a handful of manufacturers. Thats about it...

yeah I was originally thinking of having a custom piping job done for the exhaust and then just get universal magnaflow mufflers welded on, but I think I might just get a pair of Genki axle backs and save that money for rims and tires.

Let me know if you have any luck getting it to sound good. I LOVE the rumble coming from up front, sounds mean but not obnoxious. Sounds like a V8 under the hood with the power of a moderate V6 now.
Really if anyone gets something custom or finds a decent system from header-back maybe record the audio and send it with mods up front like mine that would be fantastic. I'm still missing out on a good 20hp more if I were to get that mass airflow moving more unrestricted from the header back.
UPDATE: I recently had a big safety issue with the master and slave clutch cylinder hydraulics sticking which I read has been an issue in these models. Horrible experience when you have the clutch to the floor and can't get it in gear. I got some aftermarket master and slave cylinders (why get OEM with chance they go again... Duh). I figured while they were in there maybe I should just throw in a performance clutch kit since clutches will eventually go and it will be accessible...
COMPETITION CLUTCH 4 Puck installed. AWESOME! (But stupid at the same time) I have driven many muscle cars, including my friends supercharged cobra with a performance clutch and STILL my clutch is more sensitive. To put it one way you will never be able to have someone valet your car again, you will have chronic knee issues (but a huge ripped calf) and your altima will JUMP forward with absolutely NO downtime between gears. If you don't stall the car it is almost impossible not to peel out. When driving and getting the shifting down just right, get this, the windshield wipers come on the car jumps forward so hard and fast. The most fun mod yet! NOTE: Do NOT get a performance clutch if you are a daily driver in heavy traffic, not cool. Otherwise would recommend to anyone. The folks at Competition Clutch are really knowledgable.
Until next time thanks all for weighing in and keeping this thread alive in hopes someday I'll find something that I will like from Header-Back. Then it's complete and at the track I will be using your rear view mirror much more.

QR Pro Self Adjusting

The QR Pro basically acted as a turbo for natural aspirated vehicles as it adjusts the amount of fuel/air for extra boost as it reads the computer saying your getting up there in RPMs so give extra. HP gains really range and it will learn from your CPU as you make modifications on how much to adjust and such. So the more mods you have the more "boost" you will get from the system.
I had someone professionally install it, not because it isn't that complicated but didn't feel like messing too much with the CPU myself without more professionals. Your call if you want to do it yourself, I do stuff to cars but sure not a mechanic, especially when it comes to CPUs; would you want a nurse doing brain surgery on You? Extreme but similar concept.
All I know is it IS worth every penny and about as good as you can get besides converting to turbo; then you may as well get a new car ;-)
Cheers

You're a brave man for getting the 4 puck with your setup. Modified VQ guys are usually not up to that task. Seems like overkill, but sometimes that yields the most fun result.

Haha thanks for appreciating my bravery. I had no idea what I was getting into. It is so extreme and so fun and definitely overkill. As I said above even my friend with the supercharged cobra and performance clutch kit crapped himself at how instantly the power hits the wheels. He EVENTUALLY got the hang of it. That is another benefit, tis the last time someone asks to borrow my car because they are all scared ----less driving it. Good luck trying to steal it while I'm anywhere around between the growl and the stalling i'll drag you out and beat the crap out of you before you get anywhere more than 5 feet away from the parked position. Thank god for working from home in DC area and not a daily commuter.

If I am going to spend lots of time with my car and have it for a while may as well enjoy some more power. I'm not trying to make this a muscle car. Appreciate the research and links.
