Default Jinxed myself Service Engine Soon Light ON

#&%$#* if I didn't jinx myself with my first post an hour ago! Posted my initial new member hello, went to store to grab dinner and on the way back the SES light came on (3491mi). I saw the codes posted here earlier, I'll read code before I get too worked up.

Just read the code...0455 an "EVAP Gross Leak". Can anyone give me an idea what would cause that?

I have no idea. My Altima has been having quite a few problems during my 7,500 miles. So this doesn't really surprise me.

Budperm, that code means you either left you gas cap loose or the tether for the cap is caught under the cap causing an EVAP leak.

Thanks for the info Niss! I'll check it tonight and also inspect o-ring/ gasket of cap. I had a similar problem with my Camry when the cap o-ring twisted.

If I correct the problem thet SES light should go off after a few miles /...Right? Or do i need to clear the code?

It will go off after driving (3?) miles.

It may or may not got off on it's own. If you can clear the code yourself you would be better off.

How does one go about clearing the code? Thanks.

Disconnect negative battery terminal. Leave disconnected for about half an hour.

OBDII Codes will self-clear after a problem has been corrected and the car goes through X number of 'driving cycles.' Typically the driving cycle involves parameters like "Cold start then stop and go driving for five minutes then freeway driving when warm for five minutes then stop and go driving for three minutes followed by shutoff and then a warm start with five minutes of stop and go driving and....." you get the idea. It is the computer's way of ensuring that all systems are working properly by making sure they are all actually used in actual driving. Sometimes it takes several weeks before people get any driving cycles in that meet all the criteria, sometimes it takes a couple of hours.

So if you go through a driving cycle, and the temperature & humidity are just right, and the planets are aligned, and Glaknor is standing in the Ring of Fire, then the CEL will go off on its own. But it's easier to clear it yourself.

pngil,
go to this link: http://www.altimaforums.net/ses-diag...ures-t335.html.
it will explain how to reset / clear codes without an OBDII reader.

Thank you for the link. Is the procedure the same for a Hybrid Altima?

Thanks for the advice. My Altima is a Hybrid - should I still try to disconnect the negative battery terminal?

I'm going to defer to Budperm on this one - I don't know jack about hybrids.

I had a similar issue with my hybrid after installing the Fujita wai. I used a diagnostic scanner to reset the code, but I would have disconnected the (-) 12v battery otherwise. good luck...

What's the word on this? I've got a 2008 Altima 2.5SL and I've gotten evap leak codes about 5 times in the past year. The dealership keeps telling me that I'm not securing my gas cap. I have a feeling that either the gas cap housing on Altimas is very touchy and you have to be spot on with the cap, or a few of us have something faulty going on. It's not that hard to secure a typical gas cap, and to fail at it -5- times in one year, when for the past 15 years with other cars I've never done so...??? That's an impossibility in my eyes. Unfortunately, the dealership service department seems to disagree with me.
