My car (2011 Altima 3.5 SR) does that every time I start it and it occurs between 8-10 mph. The clunk comes from the front of the vehicle and feels like it is near the back of the engine along the center line of the car.

It is very disconcerting to hear this on a car from day one from the dealership. It does not do it on new Maximas or the 2.5 Altimas as I have coworkers that have bought each recently and they never hear/feel it.

I can hear the clunk in my 11 but I could actually feel it sometimes in the pedal in the 05. Nissan couldn't explain it to me.
It does this in the 2.5 too. I've had a 2005 2.5 and now a 2011 2.5 and it still does it. Not sure why your friend doesn't get the clunk but its def there unless they were fortunate to get one in a few that never does it. I haven't owned a Maxima so I can't speak for it but I didn't get this is in the 2001 Altima that I had for a while.

I still plan on taking mine in to have it looked at. I have had several co-workers have several Altimas over the last several years and they all think mine is broken.

If it really was just a common system check, they why doesn't Nissan have something posted about it or address it in a FAQ or something. Salespeople are clueless about it, but that does not mean much.

I found this on page 5-27 for the 2011 Altima Owner's Manual. I had to search for VDC and read every instance of it until I stumbled upon this.

Quote:
"The computer has a built in diagnostic feature
that tests the system each time you start the
engine and move the vehicle forward or in reverse
at a slow speed. When the self-test occurs, you
may hear a clunk noise and/or feel a pulsation in
the brake pedal. This is normal and is not an
indication of a malfunction."
Still shocked the word "clunk" is in the manual.

It does it on all of them man. 2.5s, 3.5s, even the maximas. Both last Gen (when they went to CVT) and current. They probably don't notice it...yet. I have yet to have a problem with mine. The 2.5s seem to be the problem child tho. I don't understand y. Good thing for warranty.

As bad as it sounds bro we gotta live with it. The transmission has a warranty till 120k miles for 10 years. So everything is paid for if it kicks
