Default Magnaflows are not loud enough!!

Any suggestions, I installed my Magnaflow 14829s thinking they would be a lot more noticible than the stock ones but to my surprise there is not a big difference. I also have the R/L Y-pipe and Injen intake. When I get on it all I really hear is the intake. How much difference will there be with a smaller resonator or should I just remove it all together? Will it pass smog here in Ca.? Not sure what to do to get the best sound. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. BTW, I don't want that ricey sound but definately want it to be louder.

I think it would definitely be louder with just a straight pipe and no resonator but it might be too raspy.

It'll pass smog as long as it's behind the cat which the resonator is. If we're talking about the header, than that's a diffeent story about passing smog!!

I think you can also do a custom resonator as well to see if it's louder or with a deeper tone

Thanks for the quick response gameguru. Exactly what I dont want to happen, sounds like crap! When you say as long its" behind the cat, what does it refer to? I guess I can just remove it and if it sounds like crap I could then weld a smaller one back in. Thats the thing that sucks about exhaust, you don't know how it will sound until you do it! I had a 03' 3.5 with the Mossy cat-back and it sounded good, but they don't make it for my 07'.

any exhaust mod behind the cat will be carb legal. Anytime it is pre-cat, then you have to make sure the part has a CARB EO number. The 02-04 altimas had the oem header problem so you could bolt on a 4-2-1 header and get more hp.

If you're willing to try two setups I would suggest going with a 24" resonator. That's quite a bit smaller then the oe res. and will cut down a lot of the rasp. If it's still not loud enough you can straight pipe it, or if it's too loud you can go up to a 27 or 29" res.

Have you had any issues passing smog with your y-pipe? Technically that will not pass smog because of the removed converter, but if you've not had any issues you've should have nothing to worry about behind that.

What would you recommend for a 2.5 without it sounding ricey? I'ma do a custom cat back using magnaflow at the ends. Upgrading from the 2.5" to 3".

I would recommend using a resonator to cut down the 2.5 rasp, especially if you're thinking of upping the pipe size, although diameter pipe is 2.25. Going 3" will be massive overkill, particularly if you're only doing cat back. 2.5 is more then enough.

lol alrighty. I went under the car this morning and saw that there is a large section that is crimped in. Sticking to original without that crimp will increase flow. I'll leave the 3" for the v6 lol. Thanks

Haven't had to smog it yet but accordingly to Racingline it will pass smog. We'll see. Do you have a link to a site where I can purchase the 24 resonator. I think that is what I will try first. Thanks for the input!

buy the ebay cat back and reweld your magnaflows to them. the maxima guys love this setup. the catback is a greddy knock off with great quality. you'd get the best of both. bigger piping with a smaller resonator. it will sound sick

How much is it and where can I find it? I clicked the link but there is no exhaust there. I might be interested in doing this depending on the cost. Will it fit an 07" 3.5? Thanks for the input!

im sorry. i was thinking of the 02-06 years. your would be best and cost wise is to replace the resonator on your car it will help increase the sound of the mufflers

Yeah that's what I have been thinking. Just not sure what size to go with. Kind of leaning towards the Magnaflow 10425 which is 18 inch length.

I don't really want to fork out that much $ on it for minimal gains. I spent about the same amount on my 03" for the Mossy cat-back and the sound was nice but it didn't do a whole lot for performance. I'm trying to get nice sound without breaking my wallet.LOL. Plus I have the R/L Y-pipe, intake and the Magnaflows. I just want more sound out of the Magnaflows and am looking for the best/cheapest way to get that, which I think will be the smaller resonator. Just trying to decide on what size. Kind of hard to decide because if it's too small it may sound raspy and drone at high RPMs and if it's too big it may not change the sound that much. Decisions, decisions!!
