Default Need help with Rear Door Speakers in '05 Altima

Hello all! I am new to AF and have a few questions concerning my '05 Altima. I am doing a upgrade to all my speakers and have figured out how to remove all the panels to do it.

My question is about the rear doors....I want to take the round pockets out and put in some 3-ways....Can anyone tell me what size speakers fit? I want them to sit on the panel and not inside like the ones on the front.....

Thanks in advance for your help and advice

From what some have told me that SE-R Models have the speakers in the rear doors.. not sure of the size but if you find someone here or on a different board with an SE-R maybe they can help. If you find out I might want to do the same thing, I'm looking to do something else inside the car with audio or something.

Default what?!?!

First off, do you have speakers in the rear deck lid? If so, why are you trying to add speakers in the rear doors? If you don't have speakers in the rear deck and are trying to replace the rear door speakers that are already there then I can almost guarantee that you are gonna be looking at 6.5" speakers. One other issue that may come up is that if the car does not have rear door speakers originally then you need to do one of two things: find a way to cut the door panel to allow some access for the sound of the speaker to pass through, or mount the speaker to the panel itself. Both custom, not highly recommended, yet completely possible. Someone who installs will tell you its not that big of a deal but if you have never fabricated anything before then it'll probably come out lookin janky and sounding about the same.

Lets deal with if you do have rear deck speakers. By adding a third set of speakers to the car's system you now are throwing in an impedance issue unless you are dealing with a multi-channel amp. If you are amped then its not a big deal, if you are running everything off of the head unit then you have a problem. The fact is that most aftermarket head units won't handle the lower impedance of putting two sets of 4-ohm speakers together into a 2-ohm load. Also remember that the vast majority of decks are pumping maybe 15 watts rms per channel which means in adding the second set of speakers you rear speakers are now getting about 7 watts rms at best. If they are aftermarket speakers, then they are being starved and abused and you will eventually blow them. Yes, listening to loud music without providing the speaker enough power will blow a speaker. You could wire the speakers in an 8-ohm load and it will probably work but as your impedance increases your wattage decreases so that 7 watts each speaker got was cut about in half. Mmmmmm, 3.5 watts of screaming goodness!

I just looked at a picture of the rear doors and from what it looks like they had no idea what to do with that space that is for speakers normally and made a pocket out of it. Cake solution is gonna be air saw that pocket out and then mount a wood ring baffle flush to the plastic door panel. Then you can mount the speaker to that and it should be a little more buff than into the plastic of the door panel. You can get pre cut speaker rings from Select Products check their website. Honestly though if you are not going to amp the system then its a huge investment for a huge head ache. Nice idea but you will need to get some really efficient speakers in the rear doors and the rear deck lid unless you wanna go two channel and four channel amp setup.

Yeah I got a 4 ch amp and Kicker Components in the front and Kicker 6x9's in the rear deck.....I was considering going with some coaxials in the rear doors but might do components and put the tweeters in the a-pillars over the back seat and run a small 2ch amp to power them....I will be flush mounting them to the door panel itself....so I'll check out that website and scoop up a pair of those rings....my biggest headache of course will be running the wire back through the door and into the car....unlike the front speakers where I just used the factory wiring.....should be fun...thanks for your comments

What did you do to fill the gap between the door panel and the speaker? If I take that little pocket out and put anything there will be a gap

nothing sophisticated foam weather stripping.

I used that in a lot of contact areas and for the license plate.

How did you run the wires? or did your Alt come with speakers already in place?

I just upgraded the back to 6.5, took out the stock adapter and put in the same MDF adapter I have for the front 6.5.

I used an old metal hanger to run wires, I know real freakin classy, but I used the stock rubber leads and grommets and just pulled them through with the hanger.

I find I get the most sound from the rear deck though so I would say if it becomes too much of a pain just make sure to have a really good front stage and rear deck.

I second that with the cap. Capacitors are more for bling or when you do audio competitions. They look nice but they really hurt your system for daily use. The optima yellow top is fine enough....if you're having to need more power, I would suggest replacing the yellow top with either a kinetik or shuriken or an additional kinetik/shuriken.

Ditto to removing the L7 and putting it in a bigger box. The box it's in doesn't seem like it's tuned right...

those are nice pics of your car audio install by the way. Have you thought about putting in some dynamat extreme or speaker baffles behind your door speakers?? dynamat extreme or speaker baffles will reduce the backwave
