Default Painting stock rims?

I am new to the forum and need some advice, I really want to make my car a fun project, but being a high school student, with a limited budget.

I'm looking at headers, intake, exhaust, etc. but I first want some "do it on your own" projects. I want to paint my stock, 17" six-spoke wheels, black. I haven't seen anybody that has done it?! (bad sign?) other than gunmetal grey which didn't look half bad.

Anybody have a pics to share? I am considering satin to glossy black. I just want to have an example before I cheapen up my car. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Painting stock rims will take a fair amount of time to properly prep them. You might want to ask some paint shop pros for advise or suggestions on what to use and how to prepare them. Maybe some Nismo decals on them and colored lugs to start easy?

I know they take a lot of prep and a ton of time to do it right, but I would be willing to do so. I've done my research!

I have a couple friends experienced with painting, and I would be sure to make it look good. I don't want a cheap looking car even if I am being cheap! ...which is why I want examples.

I did it on my charcoal '05 and it looks sick. Parts stores sell special paint for going over metals like rims and it makes for easier prep. I used gloss black, 2 coats and the next day i was able to go thru the car wash!

take off ur rims, buy paint stripper to strip off the existing paint (buy some scotch-brite pads to help "sand" away the paint)...

after the paint is gone and it's bare metal, you can apply your first layers of primer....usually 1-2 coats of primer is good...let it dry

once it's dry and looks smooth (if it's rough, u might wanna sand down with really fine sand paper/scotch-brite pads) u can start applying your colored paint. 2-3 coats of color, followed by 2 coats of clear.

This process will take you a few days and leave your car wheel-less. You can do it 1 wheel at a time while using ur spare....

you do not need to take off your tires either...go to your local casino (if ur underage, tell ur older brother or dad to go for u) and grab a few decks of used playing cards. Wedge the cards around the outter edge of your rim (between the tire and the rim) and spread them out with them all standing up

Click the image to open in full size.

like so...

grab about 4-5 decks...

if you have any further questions, google if your friend, there's TONNES of DIY threads from other forums showing people how to paint your own wheels...

Good luck!

Yes I have definitely seen a few DIY's and even youtube videos!

I am gonna paint them at the start of the summer, and I have my dad's truck to drive around so not having a car for a couple days won't be a problem.

I just put on some tail light films tonight that look pretty sweet! (also taped up the chrome trim with that black out tape) I can't wait for the rims to complete the look!

I will post before and after pictures!! Thanks to all for the advice!
