Question Quesion on jerry rigging my igniton assembly *Pics*

Nissan Altima GXE 99

Well I got school soon and I was using a replacement key (big mistake) when it happen to jam one of the springs in the assembly . I've tried all of the common troubleshooting options and it just wont budge from the lock position.

Now I just want to now how the ignition assembly as a whole works in order to by pass the system all together. I've taken out the rear ignition to turn on the car.

Then took these two wire on top and wired em' to together thinking it would trick the system into thinking the key was in. ...

Well that didn't work. I was thinking this would be a rather simple system but it proves not to be. Is their another system I'm not seeing? I tried manually shifting the car with the shift lock but the steering wheel locked up on me...

you'd essentially have to steal your own car.....i could show you how to hotwire it, but then you'd have to also bypass the steering wheel lock you encoutered which involves breaking it or cutting it which i'm sure you won't want...

good luck with your tow.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! Guess im off to freeze and hammer the steering wheel lock. Will post results. Theirs no need to hot wire as I can get the car start because pulled the switch off the back of the assembly But is their no way to trick the system into thinking the keys are their by rigging those wires.

there is an electrical lock, which you bypassed, but there is also a physical lock that you need to bypass...just spend the cash for a locksmith to fix it before you break something you wish you hadn't.

Good advise SC302 but somehow I see youthful determination winning out and a $50 TO $100 locksmith bill turning into a self made fiasco

there's not an electrical lock...those are the keysense wires...they let you know if you left your key in the car....hence the door chimes when you open the door with the key still in..

Electrical: engage starter, disable park lock
Mechanical: steering wheel release

OP bypassed the electrical, OP needs to bypass the mechanical.

Can start and drive, steering is locked or basically can't turn or turns in one direction....maybe if the OP leans hard enough in one direction or another the car will go that way.

the two wires he tied together didn't bypass the shift lock....like i said, those are keysense and have nothing to do with the other anti theft measures...

Thank you for replies. A replacement ignition assembly is the other alternative to this and it will be between $100 and $150 base off online estimates. so iam avoiding that decision for now.

So are you saying a locksmith docter would be able juggle the stuck springs ( seeing as this happen as soon I used the replacement key with has trouble evan with the doors I assume its a stuck spring and nothing more seriously wrong with the cylinder ).

For further discussion how exactly do these other mechanical antitheft measures work if the only output from the ignition assembly are the 2 points stated.

The steering wheel lock is mechanical.....it is triggered when the key is inserted into the ignition and the barrel is moved forward. this allows the steering wheel to move freely. the second anti theft is electromechanical...ignition on, apply brake, car sees both of these and releases shift lock, which, on most cars, can be manually released by removing the shift lock cover and pressing it down with a flathead (bypassing the electrical requirements to shift, and manually engaging the mechanical portion). But this varies from car to car. For instance, the 4th gen altimas have an electronic steering wheel lock, different from the previous generations.
