Default Replacing Factory Stereo W/ Another Factory Stereo

Hi. My mother has a 2002 Altima. Her factory CD player started ejecting CDs for no apparent reason. Well, after her doing without a CD player for almost a year, I ordered her a replacement factory CD player from Greenleaf Auto Parts, a national insurance and salvage company. The CD player has a 6 month warranty. On the receipt is the VIN# from the donor car.

When I bought the CD player for her, they told me I would have to take it to the dealer to get an anti-theft code for the stereo. I haven't hooked it up yet, but I called a dealer to see if there was a fee for them to provide me with the code. They said they would have to reprogram the CD player and I would be charged an $85 fee for the "reprogramming."

What exactly do they have to reprogram? I can install the CD player myself, so that's not a problem. I called another dealer and they want $120 to do whatever needs to be done.

Isn't this something that I should just be able to show up to the service department and get done for virtually no $?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The "reprogramming" is probably just a series of buttons hit on the radio to make it recognize your car. I will look in to this for ya.

Thanks, I would appreciate it. I will be installing the radio on Friday evening, so I should know if it is going to work within the next couple of days. I was just wanting to know if there was anything that would prevent her from listening to tunes immediately. You know, something that would cause me to punch the dash if the entire process of removing 6 screws turned out to futile.

Thanks again.

I've been a Nissan technician for 5 years and have NEVER had to "reprogram" a factory CD player. I've replaced at least 40-50 of them. I don't know what they are talking about. Just put it in. It should work fine.

I ordered a used factory CD Radio on ebay to replace a Pioneer Supertuner which sounds like crap on a 2005 Altima 2.5S I just bought.

The previous owner said he tossed the original, the Pioneer gets lousy reception, does the original radio get bad reception as well???

So based on the info here I shouldn't have to visit the dealership to have it programmed, correct???

So, How do I go about getting the Pioneer out and the original back in?

Where do I start to remove the dash panels to gain access to do the radio swap???

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!
