Weak performance + bad MPG
Over the last few months I have seen a marked decline in my MPG, from nearly 25 MPG to now just under 23 MPG with no change in my driving habits. There has been no change in my drive, which is about 70 miles a day and at least 30% highway. What I have noticed recently is that the performance of my car is also going down. When I am at a stop, and I go to punch it, the engine revs to about 2k and stays there for a second or two, then revs up and goes. This has nearly got me hit twice now. I want to take it into the dealer and be like - fix it, thats what a powertrain warranty is for. BUT, is there really anything that can be done? I just changed my oil at 30k and filled it with Castrol GTX and a fresh filter.

About 30,500. I know I need to go get the 30k service, but I just cant swallow the $700 bucks my dealer wants for it.

My dealer told me the 30K service was not needed with our cars and that it is a waste of money. The CVT shouldn't need to be serviced then and that its a very low maintenance tranny.
I would have the dealer check into the problems you are experiencing and see if its something that should be covered under warranty and let them fix it before I went and dropped 700 bucks on a service.

From what I understand "servicing" the cvt only includes flushing the fluid and putting in new fluid. I don't know what the recommendation is, but if the Nissan guy tells me it doesn't need to be serviced and I am not having issue, then why drop the hundreds of bucks to flush it for no reason this early in the life the car.
Now, on my truck, I would service the tranny or "flush" it frequently, about every other summer, but I was towing a lot with it and putting a lot of work on the tranny. I don't do that with the altima, and my driving habits are not that hard on the tranny. I guess for peace of mind you could service it at 30k, but I don't think that it is absolutely needed or required and I don't think you void your warranty by not servicing it, guess I should ask that of the dealer.

well that's good to know. I assumed it had to be serviced at 60k miles. But if like you said, it's a relatively low maintenance tranny system, then I might just plan on servicing it at 60k miles as I'm about 39k miles.

From my research, it appears that since the CVT is completely sealed (not even a dipstick) there is very little in the way of damage that can be done to the fluid, with the exception of heat. I understand that the CVT's put off quite a bit of it, but other car makers (such as Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Chrysler) do the same thing - they tell you not to touch it until xxx miles unless there is a problem. I think fluids have come a long way since the days of the 700R4...

the 2.5 cvt dipstick should be over here
& look like this.
I checked my cvt oil at 47,500 miles,
& it was very clear with a little yellowish color.
I think i am not gonna touch it for another 40K miles.

ok..here is how I removed it. From the pic above,
use a flat screwdriver...push the seal all the way in towards the red line,
u should hear a 'click' sound.

hold on to the white area of the dipstick....
turn & wiggle a little bit, the first inch is very tight...
like u r pulling a wine crock out of a bottle.
after that, pull the dipstick out like u check the motor oil.
hope this is helpful. HAVE FUN~~~
