Hey guys - it's my first post on the Altima forums! I was hoping I could get some help from someone out here.
So, time has come to replace my engine mounts. Took it to the dealership, they quoted me at about 1800 to get them replaced. I've hit some financial hard times and thought I'd do some research to see what I could do myself in the hopes of saving a dollar or two. The mounts themselves are relatively cheap, and I've read that you can use a jack under the car to hold the engine up enough to get the mounts replaced without actually removing the engine itself. Does anybody have any experience with this, or have any source I could use for assistance with doing this? Or alternatively is this the dumbest thing I could possibly do?
I'm in love with the car but I'm paying for school out of pocket (def not cheap at all, and not what I was expecting to do) so I'm trying to figure out any way I can do this without exploding my car. Thank you, for any help anybody can possibly provide.

do you have an honest mechanic you take your car to do to the usual maintenance?? Maybe he/she can do the swap much cheaper than the stealership!! :D

How do you know the engine mounts need replacing?? Does the car rock funny or do you feel it shaking funny??

I took it in because the ride was rough, and I figured it was my suspension. They checked it out and one of the mechanics brought me out on the shop floor and showed me each of the motor mounts and where they were cracking. The top left mount actually looks pretty bad.
They were pretty nice, but $1800 ... I just don't have the money get that done right now
I'm even thinking, the location of that mount doesn't seem particularly difficult to get to... So if I rent a cherry picker and use it to hold the engine up just a little and get the mount swapped out, would that be possible? Or is there more to this than I'm thinking about?

Sounds high

I was just quoted around $800 for the three up front, they said that the rear was "settled" but didn't need to be replaced yet.

Here is the breakdown:

Right Side Engine Mount 327.08
Left Side Engine Mount 311.94
Torque Rod Mount 170.66

I think its about $200 in parts (someone correct me if I am wrong) but the $600 is well worth me not having to try and do it alone. As well, I would have to rent a engine hoist to lift it...and like you said, I don't want to break anything. I would look online at Yelp and see if you can find a shop that has happy customers. If you don't mind driving to Houston the shop I am using has great reviews and they seem to be pretty fair on price plus they stand behind it with a warranty. I was skeptical about the price until I saw yours and now I am going to go ahead and have them do it.

Ok, I was way off on the costs....here is the current breakdown and parts are OEM with a slight markup.

Right Side Engine Mount $225/$70
Left Side Engine Mount $228/$52
Torque Rod Mount $110/$44

Total Installed $729+ Tax
