Hello Everyone. Having an issue with our 2005 Altima, 2.5 S, 155,000 kms About a month or so ago, when driving around 120 KMH (70'ish MPH) the rpm's are over 3000, sometimes as high as 4000. Also, gas mileage has dropped from 675 km to a tank down to around 590 per tank. I have tried when driving in town to shift it to 3rd, then back to the right (4th, overdrive ???) usually the rpm's are higher in 3rd, but not always. Also, sometimes, when stopped at a light or somewhere, i can release the brake and car does not move forward at all

Lastly, occasionally when driving around 110 to 120 kmh there is a severe shudder or vibration. but this i cannot replicate, happens sometimes, sometimes not
Any ideas? Would like to have an idea on what it may be before going to dealer.

Do i have to go to a dealer? My regular mechanic? Mr Transmission or trans specialist?

Thanks
Ken

Transmission shop would be my first inclination, unless you have a shop that you normally would take your car to. When you come to a stop and it doesn't accelerate, do the RPM's go up as if it were in neutral? Sounds like you're do for a transmission, I hate to say it. That was the same thing my car was doing at the end - falling out of gear at a light.

thanks for the quick reply and yes was worried it is a transmission gone. The rpm's dont go up at the light, car just doesnt move or if it does very slowly
Fluid is full and normal reddish colour

It seems to shift normal no lag or flare, it just doesnt seem to want to click over to that last gear at high speed

Alright so I paid extra attention thru all the gears. Shifts fine all the way thru 1-4, just does not shift again once speeds get higher. When i said originally that if i move the shifter from "drive" to the left to |3rd" and nothing happens was wrong. I was moving it while it was in third so of course nothing will happen.
Biggest thing is the occasional severe vibrations from the front end at high speeds. Feels like out of balance tires, but even worse. I cannot replicate that vibration though, it is random on how often it happens

Guess I just have to bite the bullet and take it in to mechanic

Hmmm, not so sure I would blame the tranny for this after all. I would be tempted to try and replicate the shudder before bringing it in. Might be impossible but without the mechanic feeling what you are, it's going to be tough to diagnose.

that seems to be my biggest issue, replicating shudder. My wife came home and said she was feeling it, i got in the car and when i drove there was nothing.
Another strange issue, is that sometimes the brakes are VERY sensitive. A simple touch and it feels like the front are grabbing hard. again, cannot replicate on demand

driving me nuts :)

My 3.5SE began shaking violently under acceleration. It felt as if something had broken but in the end it was just a valve body problem and one from a broken car fixed it.
