If you don't have a climatronick on the car, just simple AC, there is only evaporator temperature sensor in the electrical chain to AC compressor. It shouldn't be difficult to reach and check wires coming to this sensor for short circuit and other defects.

 

 

You got an automatic climate control unit. It's more complicated. Sorry, can't help, I'm not a professional mechanic, just have some work done with my cars.

 

As far as I know automatic temperature adjustment inside of vehicle is going by mixing warm air from heat core and cold air from ACin certain proportion. So, the AC compressor is likely wired in the same way as one in the car with manual conditioner. But it's only theoretical knowledges, I have never worked on that

 

Sounds like a short under the dash maybe a melted wire or bad relay. I’d start by checking behind the glovebox.

You can waste hours looking for other issues, but best to just bite the bullet and replace it.

I have the same year/make/model (coupe) mine went out much sooner than 143K...
